When people think about the cost of a tour-guide audio system, they usually think about the rental price.
And traditional whisper systems are often rented rather than purchased.
Rental pricing varies by market and supplier, so a tour operator will know the actual rate they pay. What matters economically is that the traditional model is generally priced per tourist and per day.
The rental company normally supplies the receivers, fresh batteries and a new set of earbuds for the tour. The operator does not have to buy the equipment or maintain a charging station.
So where is the economic advantage of a smartphone-based system?
It is not that traditional whisper systems are expensive to operate between tours. It is that the operator pays a per-person, per-day rental cost every time a tour takes place.
Imagine a group of 25 tourists going on a five-day tour.
For 25 tourists on a five-day tour, the operator is paying for 125 participant-days of audio equipment. The exact amount depends on the supplier and rental agreement.
That may be a reasonable price for the convenience of a proven system. But it is a recurring cost, and it scales directly with both the number of tourists and the number of tour days.
A group of 50 generates twice as many participant-days as a group of 25 on the same number of tour days. A ten-day tour generates twice as many participant-days as a five-day tour.
And every new tour starts the meter again.
This is where the economics of Poly Speaker are fundamentally different.

A guide can therefore conduct a one-day tour for a small group or a multi-day tour for a much larger group without the audio cost increasing with the number of visitors or tour days.
The traditional rental model also includes consumables.
For each tour, the rental supplier typically provides fresh batteries—about four batteries per tourist—and a new set of earbuds.
That is convenient for the tour operator. There is no need to charge receivers or maintain a stock of batteries and earbuds.
But those consumables are part of what the operator is paying for every time the system is rented.
With Poly Speaker, the visitor uses their own smartphone and can use their own earphones. There are no receiver batteries and no disposable earbuds supplied as part of the audio system.
The rental model removes much of the equipment-management burden from the tour operator because the supplier handles the receivers, batteries and earbuds.
But every tour still involves distributing a receiver to each visitor and collecting it afterward. The visitor has to wear another device, and the supplier has to prepare the equipment again for the next customer.
Poly Speaker removes that entire layer of dedicated visitor hardware.
There is a human cost as well.
A visitor who receives a dedicated receiver has to understand what it is, how to wear it and sometimes how to adjust the volume.
At the end of the tour, the visitor has to remember to return it.
For the operator, this may be routine.
For the tourist, it is one more piece of equipment to keep track of during a busy day of sightseeing.
And that raises an interesting question:
Why give visitors another electronic device when they are already carrying one?
Almost every tourist already has a smartphone.
It has a battery.
It has a screen.
It has audio capabilities.
It can connect to Wi-Fi.
And, importantly, the visitor already knows how to use it.
This is one of the ideas behind Poly Speaker.
Instead of providing each visitor with a dedicated receiver, the visitor uses their own smartphone as the listening device.
The guide uses the Poly Speaker Broadcast app, while visitors use the Poly Speaker Listener app.
The communication takes place over a local Wi-Fi network. It does not require an Internet connection.
A small pocket router can create the local network for the group, allowing visitors' phones to receive the guide's audio.
The result is not simply a different piece of technology. It is a different economic model.
Instead of paying according to the number of tourists and the number of tour days, the operator pays a fixed $20 per month per guide.
There are no visitor receivers to rent.
No receiver batteries to supply.
No disposable earbuds supplied with the system.
And no need to ask tourists to carry another electronic device for the duration of the tour.
Of course, traditional whisper systems continue to work. They have been used successfully for many years.
So the question isn't whether they work.
The more interesting question is:
Do we still need dedicated hardware for every visitor?
When the hardware capable of receiving and playing the guide's audio is already in almost every visitor's pocket, perhaps the more modern approach is to use what is already there.
The next generation of tour-guide audio may not require more equipment.
It may require less.
Sometimes the biggest saving isn't a cheaper receiver. It's eliminating the need to rent receivers at all.
