For decades, the traditional whisper system has been a standard tool for guided group tours.
The principle is simple: the guide speaks into a transmitter, and every tourist receives a small receiver with an earpiece. The guide can speak normally, while everyone in the group can hear.
It is a clever solution to a real problem.
But after joining many organized tours myself, I began noticing something else: many tourists are not particularly enthusiastic about using the system.
The reluctance is often about the experience of using the equipment — and sometimes about the audio itself.
A tourist receives a receiver and a new set of earbuds, usually individually packed in cellophane. The earbuds are theirs to use during the tour and are then discarded. The receiver, however, is a device they may not be familiar with, and using it can require putting the earbuds in, adjusting the volume and selecting the correct channel.
Some people simply don't want another device hanging around their neck or in their pocket.
The technical handling itself can create resistance. Sometimes reception is poor and the audio quality suffers. More often, the volume is simply too low because the tourist does not want to fiddle with unfamiliar controls. A particularly frequent problem is selecting the wrong channel.
And there is another factor: everyone already has a smartphone.
Why should a tourist carry a special receiver when the device in their pocket is vastly more capable?
After speaking with tour guides, I discovered that their concerns are quite different.
A guide using a traditional whisper system has to deal with the equipment before and after every tour.
The receivers need to be charged. They need to be distributed to the group and collected afterwards. Equipment can be lost or damaged, and the receiver inventory has to be maintained.
The guide also has to make sure that there are enough working receivers for everyone in the group.
None of these activities contributes anything to the tour itself.
They are simply the logistics of operating the audio system.
As a computer scientist and technologist, I found myself asking a fairly simple question:
What if we could eliminate the receivers altogether?
The answer is surprisingly straightforward.
The guide already has a smartphone.
The tourists already have smartphones.
So why not use them?
That was the starting point for Poly Speaker.
With Poly Speaker, the guide speaks into his own smartphone, using the Poly Speaker Broadcast app. A small pocket router carried by the guide creates a private local Wi-Fi network.
Tourists join the tour by scanning a QR code and listen on their own smartphones.
The audio stays within the local network. No Internet connection is required.
There is also a practical reason not to depend on the Internet. Even when cellular data is available, tourists and guides may be reluctant to use their personal data or roaming allowance for a tour audio system. And some travelers do not have a cellular data plan at all, relying on Wi-Fi at their hotel or other locations.
There are no dedicated receivers to distribute, no channels for tourists to select, and no equipment fleet of receivers to charge and maintain.
The idea is not simply to turn a smartphone into another type of receiver.
It is about changing the logistics of the entire experience.
The tourist brings the device they already own.
The guide brings the device they already own.
The pocket router provides the local communication network.
And the software connects them.
The result is a tour audio system with much less equipment and much less equipment management.
Not necessarily.
Traditional systems are reliable and have served tour operators well for many years. There are situations where dedicated hardware remains appropriate.
But technology has changed dramatically since these systems became commonplace.
Smartphones are now powerful communication devices carried by almost every traveler. Local wireless networking is inexpensive and readily available. And people are increasingly accustomed to using their own devices rather than sharing equipment.
That makes it reasonable to ask whether the traditional transmitter-and-receiver model is still the best solution for every guided tour.
Poly Speaker is my attempt to answer that question.
The product has now been launched, and I am continuing to develop it while exploring how smartphone technology can improve the experience of guided tours for both tourists and guides.
